It's history, but for a long time the policy for voting in the Borders was 'the man (it was always a man), then the party', which is a recipe for disaster, e.g. borders cooncil. But there's a long tradition of socialism in Berwickshire, especially Eyemouth, and when Berwickshire was in the same constituency as East Lothian we had a Labour MP. John MacKintosh being the most well known and then John Home Robertson. But since boundary changes, tactical voting has ensured the LibDems the seat. That might change with time and if Gala becomes a satellite of Embra if the railway line is re-connected."I wonder just how much tactical voting went on around here-the Lib Dems will take some shifting but might concede to the Tories if the current trend continues. It would require a lot of Tac Votes to let Labour in. The Hutton Think Tank have been asked to analyse the election result but have so much else on that holding your breath might prove to be fatal.
