I said I would refrain from ranting about the Sheriff of Duns so I will. But I have to admit some curiosity about two recent cases-the man who 'trespassed' a village hall armed with an airgun* and the equally intriguing case of a person accused of being flutered when in charge of a vehicle-in this case a fork lift truck. These narrow lanes and alleged roads around here are currently the domain of predatory tractors and immense speeding machines loosely categorised as 'Farm machinery' . On the farm, cool, but on the open road a menace to man and beast. Some have very little idea of the width of their conveyance and leave it to the other driver to get out of the way by cowering on the verge and hoping for the best. The imagination boggles about the prospect of one of these monsters being under the control, or lack of it, by an inebriated farm worker. Perhaps fortunately Pubs in these parts are few and far between (only The Cross in Greater Paxton and Hutton) although of course, a bottle or two could be concealed in the drivers cab which is now a days all hi-tech with GPS navigation, cell phone chargers and possibly even Pokie Machines for visiting Aussie itinerant workers to while away the long daylight hours.

Today Mr Deakin has organised rain for the Borders and not for London where it is becoming needed in the Oval area. Anyhow it has had the effect of bringing the harvest to an abrupt halt. So for one day at least the farm machinery is back in barracks and ordinary motorists can venture out onto the deserted roads.
