There are times when Spittal lives up to its name-with a damp mist, low cloud and a n East wind whilst the rest of the UK (Hutton always excepted) is basking in hot sunshine. One image shows a damp cow on the cliff overlooking the bay wistfully chewing towards the bright lights of Spittal and contemplating turning its back to fart in its general direction. Cows don't really have much fun and need a little bit of innocent diversion to get through the long days of summer.
Just south of Spittal and not far from the abovementioned coo a new slab of stone marks the border between once independent Borough of Berwick-upon-Tweed and northern Northumberland, aka England. The same spot marks Cycle Route # 1. You need a head for heights, tough tyres and a tolerance of cows (and a good eye cocked for bulls) to survive this challenging track. It must also be irritating to dismount to open gates and avoid starting with terror as GNER roars past a few yards away in a hurry to get to Berwick Station.

Who can blame it.

And of course Virgin crawling reluctantly southwards.Two days to go to Devon.
