In a very obscure corner of the Berwickshire website lurks a Cartoon Corner. Obscurity is merited in Huttonian's opinion as although they do provide a reference point for local events they re usually not too well drawn nor very funny. With this image I can rest my case. However it is pertinent in that Tescos have recently won a battle royal against Asda to open yet another supermarket in the Berwick/Tweedmouth conurbation with a majority of city fathers in the Tesco corner brushing aside those people-especially the high street shopkeepers who felt that Berwick was over shopped already. Morrison, Somerfield, the Coop and many more. I would be happier if I felt that the Assyrian/Genghis Khan/Visigoth tendency as represented by the hordes of Caravanners might be tempted away from Sir Morrisons but with Tesco opening its doors near the industrial area-out of town the other way, the bedouin will continue to loot and pillage the supermarkets nearer to their Fields, not of Cloth and Gold, but discarded plastic bags and MacDonald Big Mac wrappings. Mac D and Sir M live cheek and jowl which is a major contribution to the town and countrywide litter problem.

I would like to suggest a follow up cartoon of Sir M and Mr Mac D knocking each other unconscious and being carried away to be unceremonously dumped somewhere-perhaps, most appropriately, on the Berwick Paxton road which has the most McDonald discarded wrappings per square metre than any other place on earth.

The Berwick Caravan sites alwayds excepted.

Comments:
It's amazing where McGonads wrappers end up - there are regular rashes of them on the road between Alnwick & Eglingham - so what I hear you say - the nearest 2 McG's outlets are Ashington (20+ miles away) or next to Sir Morrisons in Berwick (25+ miles away)

The Scottish Borders: 'Scotland's favourite paper trail destination'A new slogan for the Tourist Board?

Anyway - from the Paxton road to East Ord or to SirM's must be nearly six and two threes.

Tesco - a different class of chav clientelle to SirM's, but usually a wider range of foods on sale (although by choice I'd prefer a Sainsburys!)

Choice denied. Given Sir M's market share in the cheap and cheerful I don't think that Sainsbury would do well here. Very few caravanners would darken those doors.

That's got to be the best argument for opening a Sainsbury's I've heard. Although someone running riot with a JCB in a caravan park would be preferable.

But for those of us further west, there's the prospect of Asda opening in Galashiels (and a significant number of people here must go to Gala to shop given the Tesco bags). Why they go twice as far to Gala, rather than to Berwick along twisty Borders roads is a mystery though, unless there is some rampant nationalism at play.
