Upward Mobility?

A bloggee from deepest Berwick Shire has contributed the following :

Strange advice noted while driving up A1 just north of Berwick on that silly illuminated sign which dispenses useless information. It refers the hapless driver to a website for all the latest traffic news. As one white van man put it – how can I have room on the dashboard for a laptop as well as a satnav? I’ll have no hands left for the mobile……

Indeed the law on mobile use while driving is not fully understood in these parts. I once saw three successive drivers using them on the stretch of road between Paxton House and the turn off to Allanton. That was a 75 % hit rate. The fourth driver had no mobile visible but he seemed to be trying to put on a CD whilst lighting a cigarette. Just a quick glimpse so it may not have been musical manoeuvrings but changing his Sim card with a mobile held between his knees. No law against that. Jimmy

Mind you I have yet to see in the Merse what was a common sight in Kuwait-driver of a Cadillac (invariably) with mobiles held to both ears. And, sounding his horn to clear the way ahead of his magic carpet.

That's dexterity for you

Actually there was never any need to make use of a mobile phone specifically an offence. "Driving without due care" was already there and fitted the bill admirably - as it continues to do for the CD-swappers, fag-rollers and makeup-appliers.

there should be an offence of driving slowly in the middle of the road in an offensive manner. Lots of those in the Borders.

There is, again it's "due care" - but since HM Plod invested in loads of speed cameras, there's no money for traffic cops to enforce it. I'm all for bringing in marksmen for traffic offenders - nice and cheap and prevents repeat offences.

Good on yer, Paperboy. And for those twits who drive towards me with headlights full on, reserve a special dumdum bullet for the ones who are daft enough to persist when it's foggy conditions, like last night. Grrrrrr

The Wife and I were once stopped in Greenlaw for driving through the 'lit up area' with headlights full on. But when they found out we lived in Hutton they laughed and let us go
(this was very late on a Greenlaw Saturday night, 8-30pm and the fuzz were ambushing suspected drunks

PS to above-surely there is no offence of 'driving with excessive care'? But there should be-like 'breathing through your nose in an offensive manner'

Nope - again it's all down to due care - if you drive in a manner which baulks the other traffic and you act in such a matter not to let it past, you are driving without due care for the other users of the road and are committing an offence. (I know a nervous driver who picked up 6 points for this in a contraflow). As say though it's all a moot point since there are only 3 traffic cops in Scotland, so as long as you drive past the speed camera at 59.9mph with your mobile phone clamped to the side of your head with fog lamps on in the daytime whilst changing CD and retuning your radio and eating a sandwich all at the one time you're safe. Travel past doing none of those things at 61mph and you're the biggest offender in the country
