Driving us mad

Our Berwickshire Motoring Correspondent Rhodda Hogg reports

The B6461 is now minus roadworks between Swinton and Berwick although confusing diversion and road closed signs remain in situ. The chain bridge corner has 2 signs, the placement of one which looks as if the way ahead to Berwick is closed. Roads in the area are now populated by some very dangerous folk driving INCREDIBLOODY slowly to enjoy those views as yet uncontaminated by wind farms.

This coincides with a major story in this week's Berwickshire here about complaints about potholes from local motorists. Apparently the Borders does not figure in the top ten pothole infested areas in the UK as measured by suspension problems: Ayrshire is the potholers paradise but our neighbours Northumberland are in the second slot.

I have always believed, as hinted above by Ms R Hogg, that the main danger on Borders roads and especially the notorious B6461 is not potholes, or even Boy Racers but the very slow drivers which infest these parts. We should start photographing their number plates or noting them down and reporting them to the fuzz. A few of these faffers hanging from gibbets along the B6461 would encourager les autres to drive with more consideration-and would be an alternative attraction to the wind turbines which we cannot hope indefinitely to escape.

motorists who dawdle will regularly be sacrificed in order to motivate other Berwickshire slow-coaches! Great concept. . .

It does require a slight modification to capital punishment legislation. Perhaps instead of hanging the slowsters they could be put in stocks at strategic places along the roads and the public would be encouraged to fling car sponges filled with red dye at them.

Oh dear. Glad I'm not cycling anywhere near you lot. Poop poop!

We have no problems with cyclists. Might see one every fortnight. The 'Tweed Cycle path' is a bit of a farce

As a recent cyclee I can attest to the non-proliferation of cyclists. In 13 weeks I've seen precisely 2 people cycling other than myself.

Only 2 SMIDSYs - both cases were from HM Rozzers (1 LBP on his way to a desperate case of "not in possession of a pie" in Cornhill Village Shop, 1 Northumbria - he was just glaiky I think)

We had a bicycle thief in Hutton 14 years or so ago. The Fuzz got him (a) because he was conspicuous and (b) he had nicked a bike with no gears and was caught walking it uphill

Could I add to the folk who deserve your harsh punishment those who may travel at a reasonable speed, but who refuse to move over even an inch when one meets them on a narrow (i.e. most eastern Borders) road? Or is it because I drive something with offroad capability that they think my proper place is up on the verge?

Yes add them There is going to be a run on stocks in Curry's

d this week's immersion in the slurry pit prize goes to the crawler earlier this week on the bit of the Duns-Coldstream road W of Swinton and S of the B6461 who not only crawled along at 35 to enjoy the scenery but wouldn't allow others to pass when it was safe to do so (although 2 4-wheel drives did so at speed nearing one of the many blind summits on that road) but also veered left without signalling, nearly depriving this journal of its Clarkson.
