McMansions are back

So much for the recession which I had hoped would protect the Merse from further assaults on public taste.

Alas. Look at this

And there are to be two of them!

Come back "Ozymandias"

'Sense of place' is an important planning criterion.

In Egypt's sandy silence, all alone,
Stands a gigantic Leg, which far off throws
The only shadow that the Desert knows:
"I am great OZYMANDIAS," saith the stone,
"The King of Kings; this mighty City shows
"The wonders of my hand." The City's gone,
Nought but the Leg remaining to disclose
The site of this forgotten Babylon.
We wonder, and some Hunter may express
Wonder like ours, when thro' the wilderness
Where London stood, holding the Wolf in Chase,
He meets some fragments huge, and stops to guess
What powerful but unrecorded race
Once dwelt in that annihilated place.

Fast forward a few centuries.

Those farmers are getting way too big a subsidy. And BIG J will oil the cogs and shove it through.

Indeed. But no oiling necessary, I fear, planning permission for two similar monstrosities in the same block have already been given

If one really wants to live in a cramped dingy hovel that is surely fine; but there actually may be folk who might prefer to inhabit somewhere with light and space. Not everyone one wants to sit in a dark corner peering at the grauniad through bifocals; and only venturing outside to surf the dog crap in order to retrieve the next copy of that most boring, patronising and syncophantic newspaper!

Sorry sp. mistake before anyone gets the chance to yank on my lead!
sycophantic [not syNcophantic]
= given to obsequious* flattery.
* obsequious =
(archaic) Obedient, compliant with someone else's orders or wishes
Excessively eager to please or to obey all instructions; fawning, subservient.
just aboot sums up Broon's fly-sheet to a tee!

So there are Torygraph readers in light and airy Berwickshire!

WOOF! WOOF!

A mock Scottish Baronial McMansion.
A pastiche of a pastiche, not very well executed. Best summed up in one word, Naff.

The proportions of the windows are wrong, wrong, wrong. The crow-step gables are sure to be achieved with Duckworth (Coronation Street) style stone cladding.

Isn't there a similar monstrosity in the area? Built on the cheap to sell for a BIG profit.
Buyer Beware.

Built on the cheap to sell for a BIG profit.

You try farming without subsidies, even with them most farmers still make a loss producing food for you and so what if someone makes a profit from developing their land, jealousy will get you nowwhere

Surely a house is for living INSIDE. What is important are the facilities for quality life: space, light, how the "traffic" flows, amenities etc. What it looks like is important but not all-important. To me these houses look more like adaptions of a theme than pastiches of pastiches. Turrets and crowsteps look appealing - or naff to some - but pokey baronial windows were there for reason; to keep the heat in and intruders out! With modern building techniques [double glazing, thermal insulation and green energy sources] it would indeed be naff to ignore the opportunity to "let the light shine in"!

By all means let the light shine in. But accept that if you're going to use Scottish Baronial motifs it's going to look more like a Theme Park than "adaptions of a theme".

It's about as Scottish as Brigadoon.
