Musings from the Merse
Farewell Sherif of DunsAccording to today's Berwickshire News Duns' Court is in danger of disapearing as a money saving measure plus the courts in Peebles and Selkirk as well. Contemplate life without Sherif Kevin Drummond whose doings used to be a feature of the Berwickshire which no longer publishes court reports to the detriment of enjoying life more fully. No doubt the same drunken drivers, the same hapless Eastern Europeans whom nobody told they must have British Driving licences, the same 'Domestics' take place and sentences are still handed down by the Sherif of Duns but no cub reporter to reveal all. Now the court will be empty and yet another dusty court room will join its neighbours in Peebles and Selkirk and the legal service will be centralised further.
It might never happen. But I fear the worst
Lack of business is given as a possible reason. So Robin Hood, Portuguese drivers, aggressive and drunken yobs, boy racers please return to Duns; it is only your collective efforts can keep Sherif Kevin on his bench

GO SOUTH YOUNG MAN. AND KEEP GOINGAccording to today's
Berwickshire a suspected Post Office robber up in front of the Sheriff of Duns has been told to 'keep out of Scotland' and only to return for his trial. English criminals-even suspects apparently, are not welcome in Alba
Nothing new here. About seven years ago we went to OZ to visit the senior daughter for three weeks over Christmas and New Year. According to the Fuzz-Rebus' lot Borders and East Lothian Police a gang was targeting 'large country houses'-Old Manses in that category they said. They installed a silent alarm which when activated rang in the nearest police car, unlikely I thought to be within 30 minutes of Hutton-but the idea was that the alarm would not disturb the intruders and they would be caught red handed when the coppers turned up.
The only victim of this elaborate electronic ambush was our lodger who had tripped the beam on his way down for breakfast and was surprised to have a visit from the police 40 minutes later-he had clean forgotten about the device. After our return the alarm was removed without explanation We later heard that the suspected gang had been stopped on the A1 in Berwickshire; suspicious tools useful for housebreaking (?keys)had been found but no hard evidence to justify collar feelings. So they were told that it was clear they were up to no good and told to keep moving south into Northumberland Any attempt to cross the frontier and 'the book would be thrown at them' (Collected Works of Rabbie Burns possibly)
I should be mention that Sheriff Kevin warned the suspect in the PO case that as well as keeping out of Scotland he must make no attempt to change his appearance. So no disguising himself as a Scot-If he has a Kelso tartan kilt or plans to grow a wispy ginger beard-freecycle the former and refrain from the latter
Dom Henry of Flickr tells us that the image is of the real life Sheriff of Nottingham. Its certainly not Kevin of Dunns. If he went round brandishing a bloody big sword he would have to send himself down for a longish spell)

Anyone want a SheriffAlthough it may be a bit late to make a significant career move Huttonian would like it known that he is happy to be invited to serve as an Honorary Sheriff in support of the diligent Sheriff Kevin of Duns. According to the Berwickshire three new Honorary Sheriffs have been sworn at, no, sworn in in Selkirk-the article
is here Apropos of the the Selkirk trio I am not sure that it is a wise move to have one of the sheriffs with a possible personal grudge against the criminal fraternity especially if she can lash out with the odd stiffened custodial sentence. In my case I have no (local) scores to settle and although I am not a direct descendant of John Buchan there are one or two decent writers up the ancestral sleeve - if this is a desirable qualification for the post. I am not sure if Duns goes in for Honorary Sheriffs and if not I am content to be considered for membership of the
Honorary Posse.*

A bloggee has commented that now Huttonian is going to be rebranded as 'Reluctant Dinger' or something that he should take more interest in the doings of Sheriff Kevin of Duns- in his court, of course, we hasten to add.
Sadly most cases presided over by the Sheriff are mundane and frankly boring: drink driving, breach of probation, having a MOT without insurance, cooncealing of weapons of mass destruction, possession of a knife. That sort of everyday offencce Only one unusual event reported in the
Berwickshire -a 'youth' who destroyed 102 containers of milk outside a Coldingham shop by kicking and throwing them around the High Street at a cost of £112- being condemned for 'mindless behaviour' by the Procurator Fiscal and being held responsible for the absence of milk in Coldingham the following morning. Or to be more accurate there was rather a lot of milk but not in appropriate containers. In mitigation it was explained that the youth in question had been camping with friends in Coldingham Bay the previous night and 'had consumed alcohol' -had he been sober would that have been alright then?
The Sheriff was not impressed and before putting on his black cap agreed that the defendant and his friends who aided and abetted the milk curdling events were 'mindless' and thugs as well. He called for reports and the 17 year old Eyemouth lad is to appear in court again next month. Presumably for sentencing. Transportation to Oz, or even to Paxton, is thought unlikely.
It is encouraging to note that none of the defendants arraigned this week came from Duns itself but from outposts of wickedness such as Eyemouth and Greenlaw.
Elsewhere in the Borders the paper reports a second offence of a motorist destroying a speed camera. In this case he was captured on camera in the act. Hopefully the Garda Siochana will be able to return him to face British Justice from the wilds of County Kerry.

DUNS DINGS* A'Is the proud motto of Duns-hence the expression Dinger for a native of Berwickshire's premier settlement-sorry Greenlaw, apologies Coldstream. I always thought of it as the most homogeneous town in the area but a glance at recent cases at Duns Sheriff's Court-Sheriff Kevin presiding gave me some cause to question this assessment. Under the all too familiar heading 'Drove While Banned', a gentleman not called Renton but Romaldas Lenartavicius was arraigned for doing just that. Romaldas Lenartavicius-surely from some Oligarch owned dream team? Ronaldo to Romaldas,he brings it under control flicks it to Lenartavicous, beats one man, sends in a long floater, up go the heads-yes it's Romaldas again, shoots:GOAAAAAAAAAAAAL. Gosh what a marvellous Ba' team Duns Bachelors or Married Men can field in the next civic week outbreak of licensed thuggery in the market square.
And who was prosecuting the man with the golden boots? Surely a Renton? No, the Procurator Fiscal:
Juliet Petrusev.
Have the Oligarchs taken over the courts as well?
