Wrong sort of Chocolates on Line?Huttonian does not usually do links to you-tube but
this recently discovered neo-Nazi documentary (Thank you Fritz Goebbels (-your grandfather may have had some redeeming features you say?) is worth sharing with bloggees. I am told there is another fascinating piece floating around the ether-Benito Mussolini and his gang discussing the possible re-opening of Reston Station but only on the condition that East Coast National Express is taken over by a Swiss/Italian Consortium. Quote from BM :
I Britannici sanguinanti non hanno idea su come fare i loro treni funzionare in tempo" *
This is a sore point with me. I was once the subject of an official complaint by the Swiss Government over a remark I had made to the Swiss Charge'd'Affaires in Kuwait when I was a very junior member of the British Embassy there in 1975. This guy had bent my ear banging on about how dismal the UK was-strikes, inflation, high unemployment, trade unions, under performing public services, low standard of living-after he had finished I remarked that there were more important things in life than getting your chocolates to run on time. He stormed off shouting about lack of respect for senior colleagues and friendly countries. Later he formally complained to my Ambassador for such impertinence and a few months later a puzzled British Ambassador in Berne was summoned by the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs to receive a formal protest about my behaviour. Fortunately our highheidyins unlike the Swiss had a sense of humour and I doubt if my promotion prospects were too damaged!

Reston : the last Shufti. Hopefully As seen from N13 on a glorious warm Autumnal day sense reigns supreme amongst the sun kissed voters on the Berwickshire News 'Issues' Poll
Should Reston station be reopened?
Yes [2.7%]
No [93.8%]
Don't Know [3.6%]
So apart from John Lamont and Big Jim F who has voted yes? Must be a number as each vote changes the percentage by .1 . Which equally shows that a very large number are voting no.
Power of the Blog?
Or common sense?

Reston on whose Laurels'CAMPAIGNERS for the re-opening of Reston Station were given a major boost last week when the Scottish Transport Minister agreed to fund the next step in the process to find out whether it will be financially viable.' is the opening sentence of Janice Gillie's main story in yesterday's Berwickshire. You can read the rest of the article
hereAS a long time opponent of wasteful public spending (New benches in Hutton Village always excepted) I am delighted to the read that at last the value for money aspect is going to be examined-the elephant in the room will be found to be white. You would have thought that financial viability would have been the first thing to consider-years ago when the campaigners in RAGES fired their opening salvos. But there you are. Financial cut backs means hard choices but in the case of Reston Station and its hourly service to East Linton this is an easy one. So Mr Minister pull the plug and throw it away.
If you can bear to read the article in full you will come to the usual supporters for madcap if locally populist schemes. Mr Lamont will loudly back anything that might add a vote or two to an already healthy majority and as for Big Dim Jim-dim does not necessarily apply in this case, the developer's faithful friend has a nice acre or two down Coldingham way-railhead at Reston, commuter housing at Coldingham. Oh but isn't that good farming land? Yes. And look at Big Jim's record of support for building on farming land.
And much will become clear

Huge Majority against reopening Reston Station shockThe 'issue' in today's Berwickshire News on line is whether Reston station should reopen .
The Will of the People is expressed as follows :
Should Reston station be reopened?
Yes [0%]
No [100%]
Don't Know [0%]Pretty decisive, what?
But it is just occurred to me given the early hour that I may have been the only person
to vote!
So vote early and vote often seems to apply here as it did in Norn Iron up to the 1960s
I have done just that. The public are not fickle :
Should Reston station be reopened?
Yes [0%]
No [100%]
Don't Know [0%]Keep them coming in

Waiting for your Albert I like this piece from the Berwickshire News of 100 years ago
PRESENTATION - An unpretentious but nonetheless very pleasant function was performed at Chirnside Station on Saturday evening. A few weeks ago Mr C Hume, goods booking clerk, received intimation, that after a period of seven years service in the above capacity at Chirnside, in the service of the North British Railway Company, he was required for a more important post at Haddington, to which place he had immediately to remove and take up the duties of chief clerk. It is pleasing to know that the services of such an able servant are appreciated and recognised by those in authority. Mr Hume was presented with a beautiful gold albert and appendages. One wonders, doesn't one if a future goods booking clerk at the sometimes to be reopened Reston Station will be so generously treated after 7 years service. A Gold Albert would set Scotrail/Nationalised National Express East Coast back a pretty penny and as for the appendages-£591 to you sir if you hurry
hereNo need to worry as I suspect Reston Station has slipped down the shopping list-even below the Waverley Line which is now the White Elephant in the stall rather than in the room. And anyhow any new station will not need a Station Master never mind a goods booking clerk (goods from Reston being confined to pampered pets in baskets). Like Dalgety Bay it would rate a self service ticket machine and a tannoy with a disembodied voice reminding the potential passenger that today's 1234 to Waverley has been cancelled but there may be another one on Thursday.
Any inconvenience etc etc
The images are of Chirnside Railway Station-small and cosy and of Duns-magnificent and busy. Leaving Duns after 7 years as an 'able servant' would have rated a solid gold Hunter with matching accessories plus a handsome cheque. More of the same

The Silly Season in the
Berwickshire News kicks off with the front page headline:
BEAST OF BERWICKSHIRE SEEN NEAR RESTON'
Asked Passerby for way to Station (No I made that last bit up) Read all
about it hereThis is an old story. Nothing to do with either Big Jim or the Laird I hasten to add. Dave the Paper who used to have encounters of the first kind with Berwickshire wild life on his newspaper round including colliding with what he described as a 'Bambi' twice spotted a Panther, once near Hutton.
See here and scroll down One sighting appears to be of a creature smaller than a panther although, apparently, bigger than a dog
Anyhow I post an image of a Capybara-one of the possibilities mentioned in the article. Now that Dave the Paper has. sadly, given up his round, it is safe to roam the byways of Berwickshire-as long as it avoids the B6461 and the Fishwick By Pass. It should know that the Hutton Mobile Post Office is changing its round-see tomorrows post-so the Beast can safely lurk around the Hutton Village Hall at noons on Mondays and Fridays
The other possibility three foot high, not a wolf, mottled, dark belly etc etc sounds like the ill favoured dog which used to lay big turds in the garden of the Old Manse; yes, yes, I know the witness said it was bigger than a dog-this was a large dog (and large turds) and bigger than
a smaller dog
(Chihuahua versus St Bernard; if you see what I mean)

An indignant from Embra writes to the Editor of the Berwickshire:
SIR, - It beggars belief that a village of at one time the sane and rational, seems to have been taken over by egostistical maniacs who have ideas well above the journeyed plan of life.
I have dealt with the folly of a railway station, I have to let that go now.
Once that fad dies away, in comes the next stage in the stupidity stakes.
Building houses in the middle of a credit crunch, not one or two, but 112. Why? The property market is in decline. This in a village of 300 residents.
Happy spot not specified but Huttonian assumes this is Reston, of bring- back- our- station- fame. Has the writer, sane and rational, moved out of there leaving only the insane and irrational to dream of doubling the size of their little empire-thus, perhaps, meriting a station?
And I really love the wonderful new epithet : 'egostistical'; as Google would say 'Do you mean Egostatistical'? Some one like the late and sadly missed Soddom Hussein who used to boost about Election Polls which demonstrated that once again he had been returned with 100.6% of the vote
Country strife should get that onto her Scrabble Board

No Change at Reston. HopefullyHuttonian's selection of the letter of the month is
SIR, - Quoting from a statement to the Berwickshire News from John Lamont:
"I appreciate that much of the focus is on the central Borders railway going to Tweedbank but this will do nothing to help public transport in Berwickshire. Residents in Eyemouth, Coldstream or Duns are hardly likely to travel all the way to Tweedbank to get the train to Edinburgh. As the central Borders railway grabs all the headlines, Berwickshire must not be forgotten about and I will ensure that the Minister is reminded on a regular basis of the local need for a station at Reston."
Why would anyone be stupid enough to travel from Duns, Coldstream or Eyemouth to Tweedbank when Berwick-upon -Tweed is only a few miles away. In fact all three are as near to Berwick than Reston if not nearer.
This proves once again that the idea is more based on novelty than reality.
When Doctor Beeching was brought in all those years ago to revamp the railway system, one of the cuts he planned was cutting the Newcastle to Edinburgh line, on the basis that the west coast line could serve Scotland via Glasgow. His reason for this being that only Berwick-upon-Tweed would be affected and that the population of the town did not justify an extensive 120 mile rail track.
Luckily that one got away from the doctor and we now have an excellent rail service at Berwick-upon-Tweed.
The idea that a small village in Berwickshire should have a rail service is ludicrous in the extreme, Reston should no more have a station than any other small village and arguments for are flawed, leaving the door open to all small communties to demand they also should have a service.
“Good Morning Trainline here.”
“Oh yes I was enquiring about a super saver from Reston to Ayton.”
“That will be £5 please.”
“What! £5 to Ayton, that’s ridiculous.”
“Not as ridiculous as having stations in small villages sir.”It would be nice to think we will hear no more about Reston Station, except from Mr Lamont who needs the votes from pleasing all the people all the time. But I am sure that is a forlorn wish . RAGES will be up in arms -ENRAGED indeed and the nonsense will go on. But with a bit of luck the Crunch will finish it off.

SIR, - It’s great news that the construction of the Waverley route in the Borders is to be speeded up by at least a year.
writes a Mr Colin Maclean from Embra. And goes on:
However, folk in the east are still waiting for the proposed Edinburgh/Berwick hourly stopping service. This is to provide a local, seven day a week, 18 hours a day, service from Edinburgh serving Longniddry, Dunbar, East Linton and Reston with its abundance of car parking space for an eastern Borders rail parkway. These proposals have been on the cards for years, yet all we get is endless, expensive and time wasting consultation, surveys and meetings.
Pressure must be speedily put on our MSPs and MPs to deliver the railway we all want before our scheme is hijacked into an Edinburgh/Newcastle stopping service. This seems to be the thought in London.
Not many folk wish to travel to Beal, Belford or Widdrington. It’s Edinburgh we all want.
And do 'many folk' not wishing to call at Beal, Belford or Widdrington realy want to be bothered with Reston, East Linton, Dunbar and Longniddry
Especially if
'It's Edinburgh we want'

RESTON STATION THE STRUGGLE CONTINUES Nothing much seems to have changed on the 'reopening' of Reston Station since we moved to the Borders over 11 years ago. The first house we looked (rather a crummy one but dirt cheap) was in Reston and the selling point was that the station was to open 'imminently' Even if no ham sandwich bar was on offer. Since then it has been a photo opportunity for a number of local politicians wanting to ride a (locally) popular bandwagon The latest jaunt by the highheidyins of RAGES (Rail Action Group Eastern Scotland) plus the MSP- John 'Photo-op' Lamont and more promisingly the Scottish Transport Minister, who proudly announced that this was his first visit to Berwickshire. This historic event is
fully covered in the e-Berwickshire-front page in the hard copy as well in the absence of a cute -collie-eats-lamb story.
All the usual warm words were said about how nice it would be for Reston and East Berwickshire to have its own station-saving driving all of 12 miles into Berwick or a bit more to Dunbar. And surprisingly the SNP minister made no reference to the idea of having Scotland's Immigration and Passport control next to the Sandwich Bar on the up platform (17) But once the well wishers and publicity seekers had been chauffeured away the whole glittering vision boils down to the Berwickshire's own headline:
ECONOMIC CASE FOR RESTON STATION NEEDS FURTHER WORKYou can say that again.
So I will

NOT FIRST CLASS ENOUGHOr as the Berwickshire put it in Tomorrow's Paper:
First Class Ticket Second Class Serviceis about a couple going to York on a discounted First Class ticket and then being turned away from the First Class lounge on Berwick Station-wrong type of ticket in hand. National Express had the answer:
The supervisor explained this was standard procedure although Lynda, her sister and the other two ticket holders hadn't been told of this rule at any time prior to that day.
"We went assuming we'd get into the lounge and had absolutely no problems getting into the first class carriage on the train or at any other point on our journey."
Commenting on the issue, National Express East Coast spokesman John Gelson said: "Our First Class lounges are a popular facility and to ensure space is available, especially at busy locations such as London King's Cross, our policy is that access is available to holders of full open First Class tickets.
"Our advance purchase discount tickets are an increasingly popular way for customers to try out our First Class service on the trains, but unfortunately we don't have space to accommodate everyone and so we offer the lounge service only to full fare ticket holders and not to those holding discounted advance tickets.
"We publicise this both at the point of booking, which for most advance ticket customers is via our website, and at the lounges." I was once told by a Station Person (Deputy Assistant Acting Platform Team Manager)that the Berwick First Class lounge is rarely used-months with a K in them- so this seems rather mean. And the only way you can read the notice saying you can't use the lounge, is in the lounge, which you can't go into.
The plans for the soon to be reopened Reston Station includes a First Class lounge, open to all and a standard one, not open to First Class Ticket holders, but will be to those holding discounted First Class tickets. Except on week days.Or Bank holidays.
Social justice at last

Rah For RestonMr John Lamont (pronounce;lemon with a t-not tea with lemon)our energetic in-your-face MSP, a Tory to boot (no pun intended) keeps in touch with his faithful via the Mound of Information column in the Berwickshire News. A feature used by his LibDem predecessor as a commentary on what was happening in the Scottish Parliament and not primarily as a Party Political Puff as (ab)used by Mr L. Young John climbs onto every bandwagon in sight, reflecting what he gauges as the popular mood-this week for example he is supporting a community buy out of Coldingham Youth Hostel-good-no dumping (but recycling) of old analogue TVs-very good and bring back Reston Station. 'Its a shame ' says he that trains hurtle through Berwickshire and 'there is no station to serve the local people' So bring back Reston with its famous no ham sandwich facility.
The fact is that Berwickshire is hardly a hub of urbanised society. Further West the Waverley Line, that monument to public money waste on a grand scale, is to serve the main centres of population : Galashiels, Melrose, St Boswells etc. And here in depopulated Neutron Bomb Alley in the East we already have a very nice station at Ber Wick. OK, its not (yet) in Berwickshire but it is just as able to serve the more populated areas of Eastern Berwickshire like Eyemouth (9 miles from Berwick) as Reston a mere 3 miles closer to Eyemouth, but in time little difference). Whilst around us in the Fishwick Conurbation Berwick is the natural choice for a main line service. Duns too, given the differing quality of roads is almost time wise as close to Berwick as it is to Reston. And Berwick with its shops and other urban facilities is a more sensible home for a rail station than one horse, shop less, bankless Reston (assuming someone can find the horse)And further north Dunbar should be the station of choice and it is only just out of Berwickshire.
So Mr L should ask himself is a station in Reston a really cost effective public service solution or just another, locally popular (give the horse a vote) lost cause for a politician on the make?

The shock of mid-Christmas transition from Paris,France to Lunnon England was smoothed by a surprisingly uncrowded Eurostar. Bog standard is vastly superior to its equivalent in National Express but any warm glow mostly dissipated by the rude shock of sharing Northern Line with tout St Pancras. Its back to the rails today with National Express. Apparently NE will soon be offering through fares to Europe from the bigger East Coast Line stations. York yes,Durham yes but Berwick No. What kind of mindless discrimination is that? And,moreover, once Reston is open, the Commuter Crazed Gateway to Scotland, crammed with moneyed Europhiles, National Express will be offering fares to all over Europe including Istanbul and Telaviv. SAnd poor Berwick will revert to its new status as 'The Last Place in England' Not the strategic centre it usedto be. Thus at last, Macbeth's famous prophecy will be realised(Omitted from all save the Shakespeare First Folio)

Reston Station. The Dream ContinuesOne of the supporters of RAGES-amongst whose wilder aims is the restoration of Reston Station has anonymously ctiticised Huttonian's opposition to this project and implying, as I am 'retired' and do not therefore need to work in Embra, or any other railhead, everyday, then my views are of no value on this issue. Well actually not being retired just differently employed and needing to go to Ould Reekie quite a lot, never mind Lunnon, I would love a more convenient station than Berwick: Hutton, old School, would do very nicely. And of course the denizens of Reston, working hard to drive the Berwickshire economy to new heights would greatly appreciate a station of their own, complete with Costas,no rubbish bins and video security. Convenient certainly; necessary? I wonder.
Sparsely populated Eastern Berwickshire can hardly justify a station. Reston is slightly less from the middle of nowhere than Hutton, or dare one say it, Paxton. How many commuters would Reston serve. 20 a day? And would they be economically active commuters? But say RAGES, put a station into sleepy Reston and watch the regeneration!
Yeah Right. Watch the property prices rise for a start. Build em, Flog EM and Scarper,
By Appointment Developers to the Landed Gentry and Indigent Farmers, would be there in a flash and you would have two new Orchards and Three Kanes Closes before you could say ' Help! It's Not in the Local Plan'
And who could afford these new houses. Local people? Really? I doubt it. The bog standard commuter? Not at those prices. Who then:
The Affluent Retired. Those drones, put out to grass. Invisible, inactive; views not worth a damn. But they would really appreciate a station. Only one stop to the nearest Cremetorium.
Come on Anonymous. Do you really want a station?
